Ohio License Plate Lookup

How To Look Up a License Plate In Ohio?

You can use OhioLicensePlates.org to check a license plate in Ohio, as it compiles publicly available vehicle and license plate information from various sources into one search. Results may include the vehicle’s year of manufacture, make, model, and body type if available, but protected personal information such as the owner’s name, home address, or driver’s license number is not publicly provided.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, part of the Department of Public Safety, oversees registration and driver records, while county clerks of courts issue titles through the state’s Automated Title Processing System (ATPS). The Bureau’s online Title Search accepts a VIN or title number but does not allow license plate-based inquiries.

  1. Start with OhioLicensePlates.org, where our instant license plate search gathers available non-restricted data into one search, including vehicle specifications, title brands, and registration-related indicators when supported by the source.
  2. Check the Bureau’s record types page for details on available titles, registration, and driver records.
  3. If you have a lawful purpose under the DPPA, submit a request for a certified record online or by mail using Form BMV 1173 with a $5.00 fee.

Viewing a license plate on a public road is legal. Access to personal information associated with that license plate in Bureau records is restricted by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (18 U.S.C. §§ 2721–2725) and ORC § 4501.27, which prohibits the Bureau from disclosing personal information unless the requester meets one of the exceptions listed in the statute. Ohio operates under an opt-in policy, meaning personal data is not disclosed for marketing or surveys unless the individual has given written consent.

The general public cannot obtain records related to the owner without demonstrating a permitted use on Form BMV 1173.

Ohio License Plate Search Limitations

Ohio repealed the front license plate requirement effective June 30, 2025, under House Bill 54. Vehicles now have one rear license plate per ORC § 4503.21, meaning a vehicle cannot be identified by a front license plate. The Bureau’s public title search tool requires a VIN or title number and does not return NMVTIS brand data to the general public.

No state database converts a license plate number into owner or registration details for the public. Third-party sources may return vehicle-level data, but results may be incomplete or unavailable for temporary registrations, newly transferred plates, or specialty plates.
