Obtain a License Plate in Ohio

Eligibility for Ohio License Plates

Ohio considers you a resident as soon as you start a job, sign a lease, purchase a home, or enroll children in school. You have 30 days to transfer your title and registration from another state to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

  • Residency: The 30-day countdown starts with any of these residency triggers. An Ohio driver’s license or state ID must be obtained before you can register a vehicle.
  • Vehicle: Passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, RVs, and mopeds are subject to registration. Vehicles not intended for highway use require an inspection certification from a local sheriff or police chief before license plates can be issued (ORC § 4503.10).
  • Applicant: Provide an Ohio title or memorandum title, a valid Ohio driver’s license or ID (or proof of Social Security number), and sign a financial responsibility statement. Vehicles in seven E-Check counties require an emissions certificate for gasoline vehicles aged 6 to 25 years.
  • License Plate Categories: Ohio issues standard plates, as well as plates for persons with disabilities, historical, and over 200 organizational and collegiate specialty plates. Military plates have no additional annual fee. Personalized plates allow four to seven characters (ORC § 4503.42). Fees in the cost section below apply in addition to these compliance conditions.

How to Get a License Plate in Ohio?

The first registration requires a visit to a deputy registrar licensing agency. Ohio does not process initial titles online.

  • Bring an Ohio title certificate or memorandum title, your Ohio driver’s license or state ID, and proof of insurance. Leased vehicles also require a lease agreement and power of attorney documents.
  • No state safety inspection is required. Residents of Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit counties must present an E-Check emissions certificate for applicable vehicles (ORC § 3704.14).
  • Pay the registration fee, $16 safety fee, applicable permissive tax, and any special license plate fees at the deputy registrar counter. The deputy registrar adds an $8 service fee per transaction (ORC § 4503.038).
  • Ohio issues one rear license plate. You leave the office with your license plate, registration card, and validation sticker the same day.

Registration is renewed annually, tied to the owner’s birthday. Renewals can be completed online at OPLATES.com, by mail, at a deputy registrar, or at a BMV Express kiosk up to 90 days before expiration.

How Much Does a License Plate Cost in Ohio?

The base registration fee is only part of the bill; permissive tax, safety fee, and electric vehicle surcharges are added on top and vary by county and vehicle type.

  • Passenger cars pay $36 annually. Motorcycles cost $30, light non-commercial trucks $51, and heavy non-commercial trucks (over 3/4 to 1 ton) $86 (ORC § 4503.04). A $16 safety fee applies to all registrations.
  • The local permissive tax ranges from $0 to $30, depending on the taxing district. The Ohio Taxing District Code Book contains rates by jurisdictions.
  • Hybrid vehicles add $100; plug-in hybrids $150; battery electric vehicles $200 annually (ORC § 4503.10(C)(3)).
  • License plate personalization costs $50 annually. Collegiate and professional sports plates cost $35. Military plates have no additional annual fee. Organizational plates range from $0 to $50 depending on the sponsoring group.
  • Title fee is $18 statewide or $23 in counties that have adopted the optional increase (ORC § 4505.09). A $5 penalty applies if the title application is submitted more than 30 days after vehicle delivery. Late registration renewal adds a $10 fee after 30 days past expiration.

Can I Get a License Plate Online in Ohio?

Online service covers renewals, replacement plates, and special plate orders, but not first titles or registrations. The official portal is OPLATES.com, which accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. License plates and registration cards are mailed after processing.

For in-person transactions, visit any deputy registrar licensing agency statewide. BMV Express self-service kiosks also process renewals and print validation stickers immediately.

Mail-in renewals are sent to the address on your renewal notice. The package should include:

  • Completed pre-printed renewal notice or registration renewal form
  • Payment by check or money order for full registration, permissive tax, and any applicable fees

If OPLATES.com can process your renewal or plate order, use it; the deputy registrar office is intended for first titles and transactions the portal does not support.
